Children with depression typically go untreated. We live in a stressful time, and children are more susceptible to pressure from their environment. It can impact their outlook on life, their personality and their development.

Depression in children & adolescents is quite different from the normal everyday “blues”. When symptoms last for a short period of time it might simply be a case of the everyday “blues”. But if you notice symptoms lasting more than two weeks and it begins to interfere with regular daily activities, family time and school life you may want to consult with your pediatrician to see if depression is a possibility.

Common Symptoms of Childhood Depression May Include:

  • Irritable or depressed mood
  • Vocal outbursts or crying
  • Difficulty sleeping or concentrating
  • Change in grades or getting in trouble at school
  • Change in eating habits
  • Feeling angry
  • Mood swings

  • Feeling worthless or restless
  • Frequent sadness or crying
  • Social Withdrawal from friends and activities
  • Loss of energy
  • Low self-esteem
  • Thoughts of death or suicide
